Maj Gen James B. McPerson was the Commander of the Army of Tennessee
from March 12, 1864 until his death on July 22, 1864. Four days after
McPerson’s death, William Tecumseh Sherman wrote his wife, "I lost my
right bower in McPherson." Sherman later wrote, "McPherson's death
was a great loss to me. I depended much on him." To honor this leader
who served so noblely in many Western Campaigns, the Commander of the
Army of the Tennessee has established the James B. Mc Pherson “right bower”
Deed of Distinction competition.
